SATREPS Project on “Rice Research for Tailor-name Breeding and Cultivation Technology Development in Kenya”

Project Outline

In many sub-Saharan African countries, boosting rice production is a pressing issue because the growth in domestic rice production is exceeded by the increase in its consumption.

Kenya is executing a policy to double rice production, but it has to address impediments such as drought, cold weather at high elevations, low soil fertility, and rice blast disease. Japanese and Kenyan researchers are collaborating in creating rice varieties carrying useful genes/QTLs to overcome stress conditions in Kenya and developing cultivation technologies that maximize the potential of individual rice varieties.

Objective

The project will establish a base for rice breeding and cultivation technology development for improving rice productivity and yield stability in Kenya.
